| I am a member of this fine organization and am pleased to announce with them: The Lyra Baroque Orchestra presents: Ouverture in D Major and the cantata Ino by Georg Philipp Telemann featuring Maria Jette, soprano, as Ino April 11, 2008, Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester , 7:30 p.m. April 12, 2008, Sundin Hall at Hamline University in Saint Paul , 8 p.m. These two major works, products of Telemann’s last years, are the fruit of an octogenarian in full stride, undimmed by years, the most prolific and inventive composer of his era, and completely “modern” despite his years. The overture and Ino show forth Telemann, among the greatest of baroque composers, as also the vanguard of the classical era. The cantata Ino, a solo cantata for soprano, strings, flutes, and horns, is a tour de force for the voice. The text, based on the tragic story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses of Ino, step-mother of Bacchus, pretty much covers the range of human emotions, and Telemann’s music paints that range of feeling with rare power and artistry. Soprano Maria Jette, has sung with major orchestra’s and ensembles from coast to coast and has sung 45-plus operatic roles. She is a Minnesota heroine, and Lyra welcomes her for this return performance.
